Sanibonani!
We’re Karo and Sophie, two volunteers from Germany who spent a year serving at iKhaya - a year that shaped us in more ways than we could have imagined.
Our days were full: helping in the ECD program, caring for babies as they grew, driving school kids (yes, we were proudly the mama taxi!), picking up donations, and keeping food storage in order. A highlight was always taking the kids on outings - whether it was a walk in Felixton, ice cream at McDonald's, or even a safari. Seeing their eyes light up made our hearts swell with joy!
We didn’t just get to be a blessing but were blessed abundantly in return. We were embraced with open arms by the loving iKhaya family and the local church community. We found friendships that will last a lifetime, experienced countless moments of joy and growth, and left with a second home in South Africa.
This year taught us so much - about service, resilience, love, and ourselves.
It stretched and strengthened us in all the best ways. If we had the chance, we’d do it all again without hesitation.
We can’t wait to see new volunteers step into this beautiful space - to serve, to grow, and to be both a blessing and be blessed in return.
