October 2023 - January 2024
Hi everyone, I’m Chi, and I spent 3-month volunteering at iKhaya as part of a field study for my university. I studied psychology and, therefore, carried out a research project with the kids on their behaviour. I also helped in the storage room, planned, and carried out a holiday program and in general played with and cared for the kiddos! Two of my personal favourites: baking anything and the scavenger hunt. Oh, and the sleepover at the gym…. and stuck in the mud. There is just too much to choose from!
It was always super fun when former volunteers came to visit and shared their own experiences. You immediately connected with them, and it was just so beautiful to witness how iKhaya is a huge family you will always be a part of. Experiencing the Zulu culture was one of the most interesting experiences ever (in the best way possible). Outside of the orphanage, I felt deeply connected to the church community there. Definitely, the highlight of my time here was finding Jesus and starting a relationship with Him. Everyone was super supportive and always open to answer any questions!
After returning home I missed the staff at iKhaya, the kids and the community so much that I went back just a few months later! And I’m sure I’ll be back many more times in the future. iKhaya will always have a special place in my heart and I am so grateful to Loressa and the staff for having welcomed me into their family.
